GREEN TOWERS FOR RECOVERY
Vertical greening was implemented in the courtyard of a newly built apartment block in a central location in the state capital. The aim was to create an urban retreat with a high quality of stay and ecological added value. The courtyard offers space for social interaction, individual relaxation and integrates functional aspects such as covering an underground car park with an escape route for the adjacent residential quarters.
The outdoor area planning was based on the architecture of Sabo Architects. The characteristic diamond shape divides the courtyard into paved and planted areas. Climbing plants such as pipe vines and Virginia creeper as well as shade-tolerant grasses and ferns were used for the greening. Hydrangeas and early bloomers provide flowering aspects from spring to autumn.
An essential design element is trusses that serve as climbing towers and extend over several levels. The project also promotes biodiversity through an insect hotel and carefully selected plants.
The safety of the structure was ensured by cable tensioning the trusses at a height of 8.5 meters against wind loads. 10mm stainless steel cables were successfully used to ensure the stability of the trusses.
